Frequently Asked Questions

Is home schooling legal?
Yes, home schooling your children is legal. States recognize home schools and define them in their educational laws and codes. Aaron Academy is a church-related school as required by Section 49-50-801 in the state of Tennessee.

Students outside the state of Tennessee can enroll with Aaron Academy. We recommend that you find out what home school laws are in effect in your own area first. One good place to check is the HSLDA web site (the Home School Legal Defense Association in Washington DC).

What about transfers?
Your student can transfer to Aaron Academy even after the school has started, just submit the necessary enrollment forms.

How many hours do I teach?
A minimum of four hours a day, for one hundred and eighty calendar days a year, is required. Parents have the option of scheduling their school time as it best fulfills the students advancement.

How do I organize my school day?
We recommend a journal or planner to organize your school days. These are very effective in helping you set up a week's schedule at a time, allowing you to plan your student's work.

I'm still lost and confused!
Send us a note, we're here to help you. Home schooling works, and any parent that is willing to make the commitment will be rewarded far more than he or she can imagine.

Is the school accredited?
Aaron Academy is a member of the Tennessee Association of Church Related Schools, and a Category IV (private, parochial) school in Tennessee. Our graduates receive a High School Diploma and many continue their secondary education at colleges and universities.

(NOTE: We are NOT a public school or accredited by Tennessee's State Department of Education.)

Do I need a teacher's certificate?
Not in Tennessee. The law requires parents who are registered with a home school organization for students in grades 9-12 to possess at least a high school diploma or a GED certificate.

When do I enroll?
Aaron Academy is opened year round for enrollment. Our school year starts on July 1st and ends on June 30th of the following year. (Most students enroll in July or August, allowing for plenty of time to complete the minimum requirement of 180 days of school for the year.)

Enrolling as early as possible ensures that your student's records will be transferred in a timely manner, allows you to find the curriculum your student will be needing, and helps you prepare for the upcoming school year.

(We encourage parents to register before they start their fist day of home schooling to be able to receive credit for those days.)

Who grades my students?
The parent is responsible for grading the student's work. A record of these averages needs to be kept to develop final grades in each subject at the end of the semester.

How do I turn in grades?
Records are turned in to the school through semiannual reports. Aaron Academy requires an Attendance Report and a Grade Average Report. These are provided in the registration package, and are due ten days after each semester has ended.

What about Achievement Testing?
Achievement tests are administered annually during the second semester. These tests are an excellent tool for the parents to assess their students' strengths and weaknesses, and helps in planning ahead the students' needs.

(Dates vary according to each location and are usually in late March or early April.)

How much does it cost?
Aaron Academy's annual enrollment fee for the first child is $60.00 (other siblings receive discount).

Standard achievement testing is $45.00 per child (private testing fees vary). Curriculum costs vary depending on the amount and type of subjects the student is taking

Where do I buy curriculum?
Aaron Academy can help you find the curriculum you need, or you may choose from the many home school catalogs or local home school bookstores available (students are not required to purchase the curriculum from us).

What about graduation?
All students who meet graduation requirements will receive a High School Diploma. Cap and Gown graduation ceremonies are held at the end of the school year for those students who wish to participate.

Can homeschoolers go to college?
Yes. Colleges and Universities are aggressively recruiting home schoolers nationwide (achievement test scores for home schoolers are above the national average). Many home school students receive academic and sports scholarships.

Or join the Armed Forces?
Armed Forces recruiting officers visit home school institutions throughout the state, and mention their high regard for these students.

How do I get started?
You start the enrollment process by using the registration forms included in our package or available online.

We will send a transfer request for student records to your previous school (where applicable). Return books or materials that belong to the school you are transferring from when giving notice of withdrawal. You can start home schooling once the enrollment process begins.
